The XXIII Memorial Trophy Quinocho was full of emotions. To the traditional homage to the eternal player and manager Joaquin Fernandez Santomé ‘ Quinocho ‘ in the form of a match, the official presentation of the first team and the youth categories and a surprise tribute to Hugo Mallo were added. The academy player and captain , who recently extended with Celta until 2023, received a commemorative bracelet and T-shirt from the legendary Manolo ‘Gran Capitan’.
In the sports terms, the team of Antonio Mohamed debuted in front of Celta fans playing a great first time, in which the skyblues were clearly superior to Mainz 05. The skyblues got ahead with a goal by Dennis Eckert in the 15th minute mark, after a great team play with Brais Méndez and Iago Aspas. On the edge of halftime, a clear penalty by Araujo resulted in the German draw.
In the second part Celta slowed down, something that the visiting team took advantage of to take the win. Sergio had a performance defending the Vigo goal, but finally, Mainz 05 managed hit the back of Celta’s net. De Blasis scored the definitive 1-2.
The match saw the debut of Moroccan international Sofiane Boufal with Celta. The skillful attacker entered the field in the second time and left several quality details.
