Seven years later, RC Celta celebrates a meritorious passage to the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey. With a great performance by Luca de La Torre and the unstoppable cup scorer Tasos Douvikas, the Celestes won 3-1 against Valencia CF at Mestalla, thus consolidating their undefeated streak in 2024.
Eager for victory and the desire to prolong the successful start-of-the-year streak, RC Celta dazzled at Mestalla by defeating Valencia CF 3-1. From the initial whistle, the Celestes demonstrated their superiority, and in the first 20 minutes, Luca de La Torre opened the scoring with an exceptional backheel. The 1-0, the result of an assist from Kevin, marked the start of a magnificent night for the Celeste team. The top scorer of the cup competition, Tasos Douvikas, did not lag behind and masterfully converted a penalty on Miguel Rodríguez into the 0-2. Despite a small setback with a penalty against them, which allowed Pepelu to reduce the gap (1-2), Celta remained calm and closed the first half with a well-deserved lead.
In the next 45 minutes, Valencia pressed, but Celta did not lower its guard. Although with less possession, the Vigo team continued fighting and, in the 80th minute, Tasos Douvikas shone again with a spectacular header into the corner that raised the score to 3-1. This goal, his sixth in this season’s cup competition, secured the Celeste team’s passage to the next round.
With this victory, RC Celta qualifies for the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey, an achievement they had not achieved since the 2016/2017 season. The Celeste fans jubilantly celebrate this milestone while awaiting the draw on Friday, January 19, at the Ciudad Deportiva de Las Rozas, which will reveal the next rival to beat. Meanwhile, in LaLiga, they will face Real Sociedad on Saturday, January 20, at Abanca Balaídos, with renewed confidence and an intact winning spirit.
